Priests are one of the pure healing classes in World of Warcraft and have experienced a huge surge in PvP representation amongst the top Arena teams when teamed up with a Rogue.

The purpose of this leveling spec is to take all talents which increase damage, reduce downtime and improve solo questing/killing ability whether it is in the form of utility talents or straight out damage.

The only other way to increase your level speed is to follow a leveling guide that shows you the most efficient routes and quests to do in Northrend, I’ve found Zygor’s Guide to be the most useful and it is all done with an in-game interface.

Priest Leveling Spec

While some people will pick Holy to level from 1-50 it is mostly due to the fact that they want the option of healing in instances while they are leveling.

However the fastest leveling spec with the least downtime is Shadow Spec (14/0/57)

Here is what makes this build efficient:
Meditation – This stacks with Spirit Tap to get up to 80% mana regeneration. The amount has been buffed from 30% to 50%. Definitely one of the best mana management talents.

Spirit Tap – Gaining mana back after every kill? Yes please. Stacks with Meditation.

Shadowform – Pretty much what makes this build, increasing your dmg output and making you less squishy. The 15% more shadow dmg also applies to shadow wands.

Rotation

Vampiric Touch > Vampiric Embrace > Mind Blast > Mind Flay

Gearing Up for Leveling

Focus on getting the highest DPS wand for your level as this will be a major way to do damage while you are regening mana.  Load up on +spirit gear to reduce downtime as it compliments shadow talents.

Combine this with a leveling guide to get to 80 the fastest, Zygor’s Guide is the best if you have a little money to spend, since the guide is all done in game with a complete interface to guide you, you get what you pay for.

Hunter’s received some major buffs to their damage and survivability in Wrath of the Lich King, you will also notice that they are now a respected class in all forms of arena play, where that wasn’t the case in BC.

This guide will discuss the most “efficient” way to level a hunter from 70-80, other players may have a more fun or preferred way to play depending on their playstyle but this build will focus on minimizing downtime and killing mobs as fast as possible to complete quests and get you to 80 the fastest.

The only other way to increase your level speed is to follow a leveling guide that shows you the most efficient routes and quests to do in Northrend, I’ve found Zygor’s Guide to be the most useful and it is all done with an in-game interface.

As of patch 3.0.9, Beast Mastery is the most efficient leveling spec due to a few reasons:

Pet Holds More Aggro

Most of the talents in the beast mastery tree focus on increasing your pets damage, which will make it much harder for you to take aggro off your pet, and a key talent here Intimidation is a great taunt if you do manage to take aggro.

Simple and Efficient Rotation

There is no need to set up every fight, just keep up Serpent Sting and fire off your Steady Shots.

Low Gear Dependency

Beast Mastery is a lot less gear dependent than Marksman, as a lot of talents such as Careful Aim and Combat Experience are multipliers on your stats which won’t be that high before you hit level 80.

Pet

You will be picking any pet from the tenacity line as they have the best armor and can keep threat. Your only limiting factor leveling up is your pets health/armor.

If you are going to be questing in an area with mobs close together and you think you might be in a situation where you are fighting more than 3 mobs, the Gorilla pet is best for this job (and a favourite amongst a, while using Volley. However his ability Thunderstomp will be available to any tenacity pet after patch 3.1 so this will change. I can see Crocolisks and Bears becoming the pet of choice as they have abilities that add to their AoE DPS, where the gorilla will get a pummel (not too useful for leveling)

Paladins have received a lot of love with the release of WOTLK, and while patch 3.0.8 has reduced a lot of their damage they are still a lot better off than they were in the Burning Crusade.

The key here is to skip talents meant for PvP and pick up all talents that reduce downtime and increase dps.  The factors that slow down leveling are travel, time killing mobs, and downtime.

Paladin Leveling Build

While most of the build is pretty straight forward, there are a few talents here that are debatable

Judgement of the Wise and Fanaticism

Enables a Pally to have close to zero downtime. Increasing your dmg from Judgements by a huge amount while feeding you back mana to keep you going to the next mob.

Vindication

While this talent effectively reduces the mobs health, dmg output and mana  by 20%, you will be killing mobs so quickly that this is a wasted talent. However I would consider this if you plan on doing a lot of the group quests and elite mobs. Note: doesn’t work on bosses.

Sanctified Wrath

You should be popping Avenging Wrath every time it’s up, at a 20% dmg increase this provides a nice bonus in dmg across the board. Also the bonus crit on this will ensure that you finish off those mobs running away out of range when it might have otherwise not finished them and you have an add on your hands.

Gearing

Our focus here is to go for straight DPS to down things faster. Go for pure STR gear as it is a pallys main source of DPS. 2 Attack Power: 1 STR. Crit and AGI are your secondary stats.

Rotation

Judgement > Crusader Strike > Divine Storm Use Exorcism when applicable. Judgement is your big prioirty here and I’d even wait on using Crusader strike for a second if Judgement is just about to become available.

When a paladins talents are set towards DPS they can compete with the best DPS classes out there, Another option is to level as Prot if you want to spice things up and take on AoE grinding but the general consensus has been Ret is best to complete quests and level to 80 fastest.

Warriors have a history of being the toughest class to level, they actually made it to #1 hardest class to level out of any class in the game in my previous article.

With the release of WOTLK blizzard shook up all the talent tiers and introduced new spells/talents. They did something pretty interesting with the protection tree and made it a very viable leveling option.

Protection has been highly regarded as the best leveling choice for 70-80 due to its high survivability, no downtime, and ability to AOE grind mobs and complete group quests solo! Combine this build with the best leveling guide to get to 80 the fastest possible.

You are also able to use this protection build to efficiently main tank in instances all the way up to level 80, which is great because you save money on respeccing, the only talent you’ll really miss is vigilance for the threat generation.

Here is the build you should start off with at level 70: (7/3/51)

This build gives you the ability to AOE 10-15 mobs at once. Stay in defensive stance and remember your Titanium Shield Spike’s. Tunderclap + Shockwave deal out ridiculous amounts of damage to a group of mobs and when you need health use shield block then activate Enraged Regeneration and you will leave a 10-15 mob fight with 90% health left.

Gearing for Prot Leveling

You should have a mix of tanking gear and STR/Crit gear, only taking Defense rating for tougher fights like group quests. Block Value has some great benefits as well but focus on STR/Crit, Coren’s Lucky Coin is a great trinket to use with this build.

While DW prot is best for single target leveling; Berzerker stance, DPS gear, Dual Wield. AOEing mobs for quests is a lot more fun and time efficient, plus the prot tree has a lot of synergy with multiple mob fights.

As Fury used to be the best leveling spec from 20-70, Prot has come to the forefront making leveling much easier for warriors and providing survivability and great DPS with minimal to no downtime. With so many new stats being put into the game such as armor penetration, haste rating and hit rating, you need a degree in mathematics to figure out what stat balance you need for maximum dps output. It can be a struggle sometimes to chose between gear upgrades when the trade offs happen in haste/hit/crit are close.

Not only that, but the way you pick your talents will change the weight and value that certain stats contribute towards your dps.

Specing and gearing for DPS is the best way to level as you kill monsters faster and if your talent build is efficient you will have minimum downtime.

I would like to share with you a really great tool I use that makes this whole process much easier and will give you clear goals on what stats you should be working towards to reach your characters highest dps potential.

The tool I use is at www.maxdps.com and here is how it works:

Class Selection and Custom Fields

From the main page you select your class and talent build. A form will come up with customizable fields that you tweak to give you accurate data as it pertains to your character and how stats effect the dps output. The majority of classes/builds have been updated for WOTLK.

At the top of the page you can see the skill/spell rotation it is assuming you are using for DPS, this is based on the most popular and followed methods of dps in top raiding guilds. Tweak the other customizable fields further to give a more accurate depiction of your characters buffs, you can also input your characters name/server in maxdps.com for it to automatically pull up your gear/stats from your armory!

Using the Data to Make Decisions

Now that you’ve filled everything in, once you submit the form it will calculate all the values and show you the following:

The most important part here is the “Extra Stat Contributions” as it gives you a number that you can use to weigh all your dps stats.

Here’s an example. Lets say you had to decide between Headpiece A which has +30 spellpower and Headpiece B which has +35 crit rating, all other stats the same. Which item gives the most potential to raise DPS?

From the numbers we get from the chart:

+30 spell power is worth 30/10 = 3×9.07 = 27.21 extra DPS

+35 crit rating is worth 35/10 = 3.5×6.59 = 23.065 extra DPS

While in this situation is is really close, with spell power being the winner, you can use this for more complicated decisions when 2 stats or more are being traded for others.

The site also provides additional information, showing you what gear upgrades you can get for the most DPS increase and filter the results based on which raids/instances you have access to.

Use this with an excellent addon called Rating Buster to show you exactly which stats you are gaining/losing if you switched your current item with a piece of gear you just attained.

With Death knight’s (DK) being able to begin at the character creation level of 55, many players have chosen this class as their new mains or alts. DK is Blizzards fourth tanking class edition in Wrath of the Lich King and many peoples’ opinions are still up in the air when it comes to what the DKs roles will be in raiding. No matter what talent spec you decide to go with, the Death Knight has damage and survival in every line. The more popular lines for solo leveling tend to be Blood and Unholy. Combine this with a good leveling guide and you’ll hit 80 in no time, read the reviews here.

Before breaking down the trees, I’ll give a little bit of background on each.

Blood Tree

Blood tends to be more single target oriented* With the specialization in physical damage, burst and the ability to amplify the rewards of leeching health. While many will argue the benefits of each talent end game; blood has a few talents that really speed up the leveling process.

Butchery – This skill is a very solid for anyone leveling and most DPS builds that want to utilize some of the blood tree. Being able to Generate 20 RP(Runic Power) each mob you kill and 2 every 5 seconds, allows you to continuously have RP to go from mob to mob.

Scent of Blood – When deciding on this skill, you need to remember that it goes off when you are attacked, so DPS Death knights aren’t going to benefit from this as much as ones being hit, however this is a great skill in combination with Butchery for the solo leveling DK that wants to spam death coil or blow their Runic Power.

Vendetta – Another skill that is very, very useful for the solo DK. While leveling up as blood, you will almost never need to rest or stop to heal as you gain 6% total life per honor/exp kill.

Now, there are many other talents that help PVE, but the above three really push the Blood DK forward when it comes to leveling fast and efficiently.

(*) As stated in a recent post from Blizzard, they are looking at possible ways to add AoE damage attacks to the Blood tree. This could very well push blood over the top when it comes to the ideal solo leveling build!

Unholy Tree

Unholy is more sustained DPS which specializes procs, pets, movement increases and Area of Effect damage. A lot of people prefer Unholy, because it tends to be the more “fun” oriented tree in the eyes of most. There are a few abilities that speed up your leveling, and they are :

Impurity - This is the main ability that amplifies the DKs spell damage. Like DK’s already receive 25% parry rating from strength, this talent converts 25% of Attack Power into spell damage. This means your dots tick for more, and your deathcoils start hitting well into the thousands. This talent is almost mandatory for any DK thinking of going unholy.

Ebon Plaguebringer – This combined with the above talent are what make Unholy a sustained DPS. These abilities amplify your dots and magic damage even further. Not only does this affect your commonly used frost fever and blood plague, but other talents if you so choose; Wandering Plague or Unholy Blight benefit as well as other AoE skills like Pestilence and Bloodboil.

Master of Ghouls – This talent allows the ghoul you summon to be controlled by you, and become permanent. Your ghoul with the Ravenous Dead talent, gains 60% of your personal strength and stamina, and you can also choose to get a glyph which gives your ghoul another 20% of your strength. These combined allow your ghoul to do some serious damage. Being able to control your ghoul; like the hunter pet, gives you the option to “leap”, “stun”, “claw” and “huddle”.

Personally, I find the unholy tree very hard to skip over talents. I find almost every talent in it useful, and hard to turn up. It may not be the greatest 1v1 spec over a short duration fight, but for long boss fights or AoE, you will find Unholy to be a strong talent tree choice.

Here is an example solo leveling build for Blood (note: this is a level 70 build)

When deciding between Blood and Unholy, personal preference and play style should be the deciding factor. I Personally leveled to 75 with blood then switched to unholy until 80, but could of gone either way. Frost is not a bad tree, just not a popular one for leveling.

Frostbolt – makes pet auto attack, uses your trinkets and icy veins if available, also takes away the annoying sound “I can’t cast that yet”:

Finally, at level 80 your build should end up looking like this: 18/0/53

The build takes all necessary mana efficiency talents while picking up all the critical strike bonuses and chances possible to maximize damage. Deep freeze is fantastic to use with the water elemental pet and brain freeze is a great addition to free instant burst damage. I opt to take Torment the weak last as the initial frostbolt on a target doesn’t benefit from the 12% damage and I’d rather have 5/5 Chilled to the Bone and Deep Freeze.

Consumables/Glyphs

This brings down the time to cast your elemental to 2 minutes, and combined with Cold Snap your pet should be up very often and in most fights, not only is the dps boost from him shooting his 1200 dmg frost bolts a great increase but the ability to use the freeze to get off your deep freeze and combos make mages look godly by spiking off 3-4 mobs in a matter of seconds.

Glyph of Mage Armor

Keeps mana regeneration with mage armor on at a respectable level – 50% of your mana regeneration continues while you are casting. Blizzard has stacked tons of items with spirit in WOTLK and this talent will come in handy to make that spirit useful.

Spell Rotation and Strategy

As you can see in the video there is a pattern to follow in each encounter depending on which cooldowns are available:

Water Elemental – start casting your frostbolt (macro) – Pet freeze before frostbolt finishes casting and spam Deep Freeze – spam 2 ice lances to finish off target – if the mob is still left alive with <6% health Wand down or ice lance, if >6% cast another frostbolt.

After that first encounter is finished, ensure you cast Cold Snap whenever it becomes available to refresh your water elemental so the cooldown timer can start refreshing and your pet will be available right away after the current one despawns.

If no pet: Spam Frostbolt, if any frostbites proc – ice lance then deep freeze then span 2 more ice lances. That is it, use evocation whenever you are below 40% mana and keep up your consumables and purchase the highest level of water/food you can buy; since the mage conjured food/water isn’t the highest we can use until level 80.

There you have it, use these builds and a good leveling guide and you will be 80 in no time.

How does the idea of getting 500k – 600k exp an hour sound to you? Level every 2-3 hours!

Jame’s leveling guides are a step by step quest walk-through which uses “optimized quest circuits” focused on one thing only – getting to level 80 the fastest.

While Zygor’s Guide and Joana’s guide is the best if you have a little money to spend, since they have an in-game interface and Jame’s is website based, you get what you pay for.

What do I mean by optimized quest circuits? Here is how Jame’s leveling guide has a lot of value:

Quest Order

Jame has experienced all the quests in each zone, so he can go back and re arrange them in the most efficient order to provide synergy with other quests. This ensures that you always overlap quests that involve the same mob or area. I hate it when I go somewhere to do a “Gather (y) item from (x) mob” then find out from another quest giver who asks me to “Kill (x) (the same mob) 20 times”  realizing it would of saved me a lot of time if I had both quests before.

Time Saving

You never waste any time thinking of the next best place to go, where to find quests, how to do it. Jame’s guide shows you exactly where you should be and what to do and also thinks ahead for you for things like setting your hearthstone so you can port back when you go do the far quests… now thats efficiency!

Jame’s Guide vs Quest Helper/Carbonite

While qh and carb show you where to go to complete objectives for quests you are on, you need the human input of Jame’s guide to know the order in which to get the quests and complete them for the best efficiency. I was getting around 150k-250k exp an hour doing quests as I found them in the towns but wasted time figuring out where to get more quests or what I “should” be doing.

Jame’s Guide vs Zygor’s Guide and Joana’s guide

One thing I noticed already that Jame’s guide is missing compared to Joana’s and Zygor’s guides is that theirs are all done using an in-game interface so you don’t need to alt-tab out and scroll around to find where to go next, you will have indicators on your wow map to show you where to go and objectives to complete which raise your exp/hour. If you don’t mind spending a few bucks on a guide that will be the most efficient leveling, then Zygor’s/Joana’s is the way to go.

It has been a long time since a lot of us have been in leveling mode, and even those who have gone back and leveled alts up to 70 will notice that leveling 70+ is tougher without all those nice twink items to give you the upper hand.

Following the advice in this guide will ensure you are doing everything available to you to increase your efficiency and level the fastest possible on your way to level 80, and make it a little more fun as well.

However if you want to know the most efficient routes and easiest quests to get to 80 faster, Zygor’s Alliance and Horde guide is the best guide around, now updated for WOTLK with a total in-game user interface, so no more alt-tabbing to check website guides. I’ve had the opportunity to use both Zygor’s and Joana’s guide and I must say I have confidence recommending Zygor’s, its also cheaper as well.

Now, on with the article.

Addons

With so many great addons out there it is tough to figure out which ones are the most simplistic and straight to the point for just helping make leveling easier.

Quest Helper or Carbonite

These two are a must have for anyone leveling 1-80. When you enter a new zone pick up all the quests you can at each area then these addons will populate your map with markers and notes to show you exactly where to go and what you need to do there in point form. A good tip here is to complete quests in chunks that are all batched together and then when the other quests are too far away or you are done go back to town and get all the follow ups.

Cartographer (Carbonite has its own map)

Fantastic map that replaces the old one, a lot of customization available and it comes with battleground and instance maps as well. Compatible with gathermate (great for gatherers) and pretty much all other addons you have.

Tital Panel (Optional)

I am an efficiency kinda person, and this addon shows you statistics on your experience gains, but my

favourite is the “exp/hour” which shows how well you are doing. Grab a bunch of quests, go complete them, and after you turn them in take a look at this puppy and you will see the number shoot up to an average exp an hour which will also tell you how much time you have left to the next level.

Talent Builds

A pretty obvious tip. Go through your talents and respec into ones which increase your dps and lowers your downtime. Here’s a link to the best talent leveling builds for each class:

Inscriptions/Glyphs

You can increase the effectiveness of your character by a large amount with inscriptions! Many inscriptions were designed by blizzard for certain purposes so you will have your options of major glyphs which are suited for PVP, Raiding and Leveling! check the class forums to see what they are considering the best inscriptions for lowering downtime and raising dps.

Consumables

A lot of consumables have dropped in price considerably since the market for raids has been wiped out, you can buy flasks now that last for 2 hours, last through death and increase your dps by a large amount, these are a great investment if you can find them for a reasonable price if you aren’t too strapped for cash.

My favourite is buying the flask of undeath to give my frost mage. A good boost in dps, that’s +80spell dmg for 2 hours for about 20g.

Mana/Health pots are always a great idea to have on hand for tricky situations, they can give you a bit of help on that tough quest you are doing solo, and can save your skin from a death which would really lower your exp/hour

Stay away from battle/guardian elixirs, which go away on death, as there is a high chance if a mob doesn’t get you, you may get ganked if you are on a pvp server and will make you that much more frustrated.

Enchants

Stay away from costly enchants, period. Unless you end up getting a piece of gear from an instance that you know you’ll hold onto for a while I would stay clear from enchanting anything that will be replaced in 2-3 levels.

Gems

Cheap gems are available on the AH. Compare your new quest reward that has empty sockets to your current gear and if gemming them up with the new 70+ green gems is a considerable dps boost, don’t feel bad about spending money here as the cost isn’t too high.

That concludes this general overview of leveling tips. I will be focusing on each class later to fill in the best glyphs and alternative leveling specs.

It’s unusual for people to look for the hard way to do things, especially when great guides are available showing you the fastest way to level. However WoW has turned into a game that is playable for a wide age group and made relatively easy to progress.

There is no way to raise the difficulty level unless you impose restrictions or attempt to go about things the hardest way.

Adding this difficulty to the game makes things challenging for those up to the task and brings a sense of pride of having leveled up the hardest class in the game.

You want hard? here it is:

The hardest class to level would be a Mage, but wait, you can only use fists, in all +str gear. Now there’s a challenge!

OK, now onto the real part of the article.

To determine the hardest class to level we have to come up with a definition of what we mean by “hardest”

Rate at which exp is gained, solo.

How fast you level is directly related to how much DPS you can deal, combined with how much downtime you have between fights. Therefore a class that deals low amounts of dps and must rest a long time before the next fight would level the slowest. Exp/Hour = Most Mobs Killed in an hour.

Survivability

Dying can take a lot of time out of leveling, and at times no matter how careful you are there will be that patrol coming from behind you that you didn’t see. Certain classes have abilities to escape these sticky situations while others do not, and will probably end up dying after aggroing more than they can chew.

The mighty Warrior.

May seem strange, they are tough as nails, have tons of HP and look pretty beastly, but there are a few reasons why they are the hardest to level.

A lot of downtime

Warriors must rest very frequently, relying on food and bandages to heal themselves. This takes time out of leveling and can be very slow and tedious, as well as expensive, they have amongst the highest repair bills because of all the punishment they take.

Lack of survivability

Every fight a warrior gets into is a “do or die” situation, yes they have hamstring, but by the time they use that and start to retreat, the mob usually has time to get in an extra 2-3 hits, and if you end up aggroing an add that you can’t handle, you’re pretty much toast… the best thing to do is RUN AWAY!

If you are looking for a challenge, warriors are the hardest class to level, can get very frustrating at times and many people have quit in the process, but if you stick it out they are one of the best for arena pvp and the most needed class for groups and raids.

Runner up: Paladin – even with their leveling build they have the lowest DPS in the game, although they have much more survivability than a warrior and later on can AOE level.
