Analysis and Discussion of Making Gold in World of Warcraft

Gold total Aug 11

I must admit something, after hitting the gold cap in WoW I lost a lot of motivation to continue my daily gold making routine. It goes to show that you need to constantly create new goals to reach once past milestones have been met or you’ll have a lack of focus.

I always enjoyed gold making and the most fun part for me was finding new and better ways to make that gold so I could go from 3,000g/day to 5,000g/day.

Well I think the time has come that I want to get the production cycle back into full swing and take my hand at hitting 1 Million liquid gold in game.

Current Stock and Gold

Gold total Aug 11

Currently I have 271,477 liquid gold, I actually bought a chopper yesterday, my only gold sink which cost me 15k so I’m down to 256,477g. My total including all my inventory sits at 369,455g.

In order to hit a million gold I’ll need to make 743,000g and if I’m trying to hit that before Cataclysm that’s roughly 3 months worth of time that’d I’d have to make 247,666g/month or roughly 60,000g a week! Currently my highest income weeks have been about 25,000g profit a week.

I don’t think I can hit this amount with only 4 gold making professions… but I am going to see how well I can do!

I will be reporting back weekly on my progress to hit a million and will keep track of my time spent on each gold making method so I can show which methods make the most gold per effort, also I’ll share my best selling items and profits for each category so you can try it out on your own servers.

Nice goal and good luck!! Im trying as hard as i can to just hit the gold cap..im at 50k liquid gold, but just had a bot or something show up on our server who will do a cancel repost cycle every 10 mins and he Never ever logs out…hes on 24/7 (wake up to feed baby and check auctions and yep…hes there still lol) begining to suspect account sharing activities at this point.

Phew, good luck! I just hit goldcap myself, and I too find it hard to be motivated to continue running my “goblin machine” in high gear. At the same time, there’s not really anything currently in game that I want to buy (with the exception of some Portable Hole bags LOL) Kind of sad really…

But there’s no way I’m going for the million gold mark, that would make me go insane! Gold cap was tough enough! :D

Good luck Kraklin! I’ve just restarted on a new realm and my goal is to get to the gold cap! I’ve got 80k in total across my old a new realm.

Best of luck, your work so far has helped me a lot even though I’ve just started with my gold making and I plan to make it to gold cap before cataclysm. I’m sure that you progress updates will be very informative and helpful as usual.
    Keep up the awesome work

Kewl idea. I find sales so low right now. I guess less people playing cause of summer in general and the lull till Cata. Also wonder who the mobile AH is cutting into my sales. All I know is a lot of unsold is in my box.

Good luck! My sales lately have been a bit stagnant. I made up to 100k pretty quickly, but ever since reaching that benchmark, I’ve been fluctuating between 100-120k. Enchanting has been more difficult to make gold with since Abyss Crystals seem to have all but vanished on the AH, and Large Brilliant Shards have been in short supply. Abyss Crystals could usually be obtained for 25-30g a piece, but over the last month or so have been about 40g each. Ouch! The cost of uncut epic gems has begun to come more in line with their cut versions, so the profit margins here have been small.

I still have 6 full bank tabs of materials for Enchanting, Jewelcrafting, Blacksmithing (including one full tab of Saronite Bars), and Tailoring. Currently I’m leveling a shaman with alchemy, and deciding on a good second profession. It will probably be mining, just so I can turn a lot of my stockpile of materials into Titansteel Bars for Blacksmithing. I need a Leatherworker and Engineer as well, but my hunter (Enchanting/Engineering) is on the other faction for now. If I transferred it, I could drop Enchanting for LW.

Anyway, my original goal was to hit 100k, and now it’s to obtain the gold cap. I’ll probably reach it before Cataclysm, but there is one particular gold sink that will be tempting me: a run of ICC-10 normal + heroic (excluding H LK) for the frostbrood vanquisher drake. Cost: 80k gold. Included: Kingslayer, the meta for the drake, and any loot I can use (excluding certain pieces that may be reserved for certain guild members). I can certainly afford it at the moment, but I want to get at least to 180k before I buy it, to make sure I stay above 100k. Yay for gold! xD

Jewelcrafting is my primary gold maker at the moment. I too have noticed that the margin between the cost of uncut gems and the sales price of cut gems has narrowed significantly. In fact, I have purchased cut gems at or very near the cost of uncut gems on several occasions. While I may make a few gold on the transaction it is not a good sign.

I have noticed that the cost of uncut gems seem to be the lowest in the morning and the price for cut gems seems to be the highest. As the day wears on the two figures seem to come together until the early evening when they sometimes come very closely together.

Am I imagining this or have others seen this too?

Revenue: 78704g, Expenditures: 782369, Net Profit: 435g. I’m spending a lot and making a lot. It’s doing nothing for me. JC makes me about 20g per gem, inscrp makes me none, trans alch makes me about 200/day. Mining/skinning are useless. I’m too stuck.

  9. Mogul says:

It’s a worthy goal : ) All the best with it!

I’m currently at 345k and pushing towards double cap. I’ll be happy to stop there though and just enjoy some questing in the expansion I think.

  10. Leper Gnome says:

I hope to make half as much gold before Cataclysm as you guys make in a week 1000k gold that’s insane haha. Got awhile before that’s even a thought : )

  11. Furioer says:

I am currently sitting at 542k and have already passed my pre-cata goal of 500k. My only expenditure was a traveler’s mount for faster access to vendors while leveling!! Otherwise, I am heavily in many markets, but I only focus on the highest profit margin on a daily basis. Currently that is gems on my server. I was at 150k pre 4.0 but stockpiling 10,000 premade glyphs allowed me total dominance of the Glyph market, and I have since bankrolled that into Gems, as well as heavily selling Darkmoon faire complete decks that people have unloaded way below market cost from the Insane grind.

  12. Furioer says:

I see a lot of numbers thrown up here, thought I would add mine in. Markets are difficult, but the best way to maintain value is to invest the time and gold to create an artificial shortage. Buy up the uncut gems even if those purchases are going to net you 5g. It lowers availability, and creates a scarce market which increases the price base. Your expected 5g proft turns to 20g and so on.

My past 7 days numbers are
    Gained 216,830g. Spent 164,815g. Profit 52,014g
    Yesterdays numbers
    Gained 36,353g. Spent 25,085g. Profit 11,268g

I usually alternate 8-10k days with 3-4k days due to buying up large amounts of raw materials every other day to force this artificial scarcity. I avoid rebuys if I am sitting on large stockpiles though.
