Many of the fastest ways to make gold in World of Warcraft are through professions, mainly gathering professions where you sell the gathered herbs, leather or ore on the auction house for a nice income.
However, recently Blizzard has made tweaks to certain crafting professions that pretty much pigeon-hole each class to take these professions in order to attain the best gear possible. Mages need tailoring for Spellstrike and spellfire, warlocks need shadowcloth tailoring, warriors need blacksmithing and so forth.
So how does a player generate income without having to rely on professions?
1. Daily Quests – 50g an hour
Whether you are working towards getting the nether ray or nether-drake mount, doing these daily quests each day will generate you 120g, although this does take about 2.5 hours to complete all 10 and does not compare to the 250g you can make an hour mining. Group up with others to speed up the quests.
2. Farming Motes of (air/fire/water) – 150 – 300g an hour
If you have a character that has decent damage output you can get to one of the best farming spots and grind out some primal water, fire and air. On my server these primals sell from anywhere between 24 – 32g each, pretty much the best thing to farm if you enjoy grinding on mobs for your income.
Mote of Fire:
Nagrand’s Elemental Plateau – Talk about overfarmed, everytime I go here there’s always too many fighting over 1 mob, I would not recommend this place unless you are playing during off-peak times.
Blades Edge, South of Ogri’la – Vile Fire-Souls spawn all around here and not too many people are camping this area, I have has the most success here for motes of fire, getting around 5-6 primals every hour which equal around 150g an hour.
Mote of Water:
Nagrand’s Elemental Plateau – Just to the west of the actual plateau you will find a little island surrounded with Crashing wave-spirits, but here’s the tip that could potentially earn you the most gold than anywhere else. Around the island you will see the odd swirl of water, called “Pure Water”, if you have fishing high enough, you can kill the Crashing wave-spirits for 5-6 primals an hour, as well as fish these swirls of “pure water” spawns that always generate motes of water. Doing this will net you 250 - 300g an hour, arguably the fastest way to generate gold.
Mote of Air:
Shadowmoon Valley, south of Wardens Den - While the drop rate of motes of air are highest at the Nagrand Elemental Plateau, we still encounter the same problem with it being over farmed. The best place to go with the highest spawn rate would be shadowmoon valley, just south of the Wardens Den, here you will be hunting the Enraged Air Spirits that have a 30% chance to drop between 1 – 2 motes of air every kill.
3. Buying and Selling on the Auction House for profit
This was my little secret in getting gold when I didn’t have a profession, using an add-on called Auctioneer(<– download link). What this add-on does is each time you visit the auction house, you can scan all the items currently available. This takes around 15 minutes to complete but it is well worth it. After a few scans on different days data is available that shows the median price of all the items that is in the database. Using this information you can use a separate tab which enables you to see all the current items that are selling below the median price. This is the best way to find items that are selling well below market value that you can snatch up for yourself or buy to resell at a profit.
So there you have it, don’t feel compelled to keep those gathering professions if you have a better use for a crafting profession, if you have other ways you can make gold faster without a profession feel free to share it here.
