Here is a quick update on the status of the auction house.
After the release of WOTLK, there was a major shift in the AH. People were eager to get rid of all their stock piled materials and equipment, while others were holding off on any purchases of new gear knowing they’d pick up some nice replacements on the way to level 70. (I wrote a detailed post here on the state of the WoW economy 3 weeks ago)
Continue reading to see how the market is starting to settle and how to start making a profit.
Prices for level 70 BoE items dropped half their value overnight (refer to picture on the right – Kamaei’s Cerulean Skirt) as well as lvl 70 gems and common end game enchants.
This was my main source of income, and once I saw this drop in prices and the overinflation occuring with WOTLK, I was only able to make gold using this guide I’ve followed since WOTLK came out to save up for my epic mount.
While the market for level 70 BoE gear is still horrible, there are two opportunities I have spotted recently, below you will see Blood-Tempered Spaulders, which are a level 71 rare BoE drop in WOTLK. BOE drops that are level 71+ have been selling very well from people who are just getting into Northrend and wanting to twink their gear without waiting for quest rewards, and the prices continue to stay at the top, in this case I grabbed Blood-Tempered Spaulders for 45g and resold it right away for 250g.
Also the market for Twink gear is still going strong, there was a while where there was a slump due to everyone focusing on WOTLK, but the hardcore players who have already done everything are now back on their BG alts, and others have gotten over their WOTLK fever and are now back to what they like, low level BG’s. Below you’ll see Humbert’s Helmet I sold on Nov 25th for 49g, I bought it for 3.75g.
A word of warning: for buying twink gear; Blizzard introduced Heirloom items (ex: Grand Staff of Jordan) which will be level 1-80 rare items. Basically they will level with your character and will always be the equivalent to that levels epic quality. This will pretty much wipe out the market for twink weapons and shoulders, as these are the only heirloom item slots I’ve seen.
As for commodities (Profession items, raw materials) we are seeing good changes coming about.
Low level gathering materials have shot through the roof! everyone is powerleveling their professions now and need to get all those low level raw materials to skill up, all low level metals and herbs are selling for 150% – 200% above old market values, take a look for yourself:
Fill the demand, you can go back to these starter zones and profit from this, also nab up any low priced materials if you are ever lucky enough to see them going for a low price.
The Market for TBC raw materials have gone down because everyone unloaded all their raw materials and the demand is not matched, but I do foresee there being a spike later on when the majority of peoples left over supplies are gone and everyones professions are starting to get close to lvl 60-70 items:
Lastly, the market for new WOTLK raw materials have continued to drop rapidly from their extremely overinflated price, but we see the prices starting to reach a point where demand is meeting supply in the case of herbs and mining:
While the market for Buying and Selling is still pretty risky right now, if you stick to buying twink armour below level 60 you will still see great profits, and for the best money currently raw materials are the best way to go. Also check out the guide I have been making the majority of my profits to save up for my 20,000g mammoth.
Stay tuned for a big guide I’m going to be posting shortly on how I find these deals and my methods of buying and selling to make a profit on the auction house.

What is that addon you used here on these screenshots? It looks good.
One thing I’ve noticed on my server is that conversion items (ore to bars, crystalized to eternal) are still good moneymakers.
Cobalt Ore on my server was at 3g/ea with bars still going for 6g, so bought, smelted & sold 20 to gain cash for a free stack of ore.
Also now eternals/crystalized items don’t require any profession to break/recombine, so watch the price of one vs the other & sometimes you can pick up bargains.
@ILikeWoW
I am using the Auctioneer addon which is a huge addon that tracks data/prices from all your scans.
I’m going to be doing a huge guide to the auction house in the next week so be on the look out for that and how I use the addon to make a lot of profit buying/selling and seeing what is under supplied and high demand.
@DougE
very smart, that is a great strategy I want to delve into in another article where you compare the prices for each item that can be converted to another type, and if there is a profit to be had you can buy them up and do the conversion.
This goes for primals, a lot of enchanting essences that can broken into 3 units or made into a greater essence from 3, Smelting metal if the bars are going for more than the ore…. so many opportunities so keep an eye out for that article.
Looking forward to your next article
Have downloaded auctioneer but it seems I could use a little guidance here.
Best,
Ye, really nice guide…I just have a problem…sometimes the items I buy under the average price and try to resell them(still undercutting all others) just don’t get sold after 48 hours. I mean i made like 500g the first day selling green stuff and some mats and sockets. Then I bought gold ore, iron ore, some silver(that sold quickly) colbat(sold almost 2 hours later) nexus crystal (damn, didn’t sell after 4 days…and still trying to sell it) and some other things like borean leather and stuff…any suggestion on what to buy?
