Analysis and Discussion of Making Gold in World of Warcraft

Kraklin On June - 18 - 2010

In the video above I show my daily routine with enchanting and how I use my gold making addons to make a hefty profit from scrolls.

I recently posted a video on how I leveled enchanting from 1-450 for the most profit. Now it’s time to start making gold with enchanting in 3.3.3 and incorporating it into my mix of other professions (read how I make my gold to see all my gold making strategies).

There are so many enchants and getting started can seem daunting so here’s how I went about it.

Get Enchant Formulas

Step one is to visit Vanessa Sellers in Dalaran and buy up pretty much all the formulas she sells. All of these are great sellers except for the following:

Enchant Cloak – Mighty Armor
Enchant Weapon – Icebreaker
Enchant Weapon – Giant Slayer
Enchant Weapon – Scourgebane

There are some other enchanting recipes that are good sellers and not included in this list, such as Mongoose, I will write up how to source those formulas in an upcoming article.

Use LSWS To Find Most Profitable Enchants

With a list of popular enchants you can now do a full scan of the auction house (do /auc getall). This will refresh the values in Lil’Sparkys Workshop and show you the lowest priced scroll currently on the auction house on the left column, and the cost to craft the scroll in the right column using your servers market prices.

With this data, you can sort the list by highest profit. Start to craft one of each of these scrolls from top to bottom until you reach less profitable scrolls or you can’t afford to invest more.

Review Sales With Beancounter

After crafting and posting these items (you can start off posting with just appraiser in auctioneer) you should be getting some sales coming back. Open up beancounter, make sure only “Auctions” is checked and search for “Scroll of”, this will provide you with a list of all your enchants that are selling for a profit.

From the scrolls you see selling you can now add these to your KTQ macro so it will always add these to your skillet queue if you run out of supply.

I use the item number instead of item name as it really saves on character space in the macros. Go to wowhead.com and search for whatever scroll you are looking for, at the top URL you will see the item=#, type in that # into the KTQ macro as follows:

/ktq queue 2 38979    < — example of Scroll of Enchant Gloves – Exceptional Spellpower

Here’s my KTQ macro I currently use for all my best selling enchants:

/ktq queue 2 38912
/ktq queue 2 38914
/ktq queue 2 38937
/ktq queue 2 38951
/ktq queue 2 38963
/ktq queue 2 38964
/ktq queue 2 38973
/ktq queue 2 38978
/ktq queue 2 38979
/ktq queue 2 38989
/ktq queue 2 38991
/ktq queue 2 38995
/ktq queue 2 38997
/ktq queue 2 38999
/ktq queue 2 39005
/ktq queue 2 39006
/ktq queue 2 44453
/ktq queue 2 44455
/ktq queue 2 44456
/ktq queue 2 44457
/ktq queue 2 44463
/ktq queue 2 44466
/ktq queue 2 44467
/ktq queue 2 45060

I advise you to make your own list that pertains to your servers economy, or only make 1 of each scroll first to make sure they’re selling on your server.

Create QA3 Groups For Posting

Once you are crafting 25 different enchanting scrolls a day using appraiser to post scrolls can be so much work since you are analyzing each scrolls price to see if it is within your profit range. You should instead set up QA3 groups for each scroll so that all you need to do is do your KTQ macro, craft whatever is in skillet, then press Post on QA3 and it’ll post whatever is profitable and leave in your inventory the scrolls that are too low priced.

Enchanting is my 2nd best gold making profession that I highlighted in my highest gold making professions per effort post the other day. I second it only to Jewelcrafting and once I pick up the other enchants that are harder to get (so should be less competition) it might very well take over Jewelcrafting as my best gold making profession.

Also, some of the best enchants I sell are low level weapon enchants. Crusader, +29/+30 Spellpower and 1H/2h Agility. +100 hp to chest is also good. The key to all these enchants, is that they are some of the best possible enchants for heirloom items, making people with a lot of gold the ones that are buying them.

Agility is a pretty fast rep grind to get. Crusader has a good/easy spot to farm, but +29 and +30 SP are MC boss drops: Just keep an eye on the AH for them. They can get pretty pricey but also sell pretty well too. I bought +30 SP for 5k and made the money back in a few weeks, now I sell it for 100-300g profit on each scroll and do it in person for 50g.

Ive also noticed that enchant scrolls sell better when there are none of a certain mat on the AH. + 1H Agility is great for this. When possible, i’ll buy up all the Essence of Air on the (normally not a lot there to begin with). Making it much harder to get done by an enchanter in person, causing people buy the overpriced scroll instead.

Also, thanks for the list of your best scrolls, make it much faster to get my own KTQ queue going.

My enchanter is only missing 6 enchants, the 4 glove enchants from AQ40, and the 2 enchants from Ulduar. I could probably sell the hell out of twink enchant scrolls if the materials weren’t so hard to farm. Unfortunately, my time is worth too much to make it profitable.

Enchant Chest – Greater Stats (+4 to all stats) is the king of heirloom chest enchants on my server. The recipe is hard to come by, so watch the auction house for it.

Speaking of hard to find enchants, I make a decent amount of money by flipping world drop recipes. I check the auction stats to find recipes that are rare and buy low, sell high. I make a lot of money with Burning Crusade gem recipes, especially the green recipes that only drop from certain mobs around Ogri’la. There’s money to be had in old-world Enchanting recipes as well. It seems like Jewelcrafting and Enchanting are the most “Pokemon” professions (gotta collect ‘em all) as far as recipes are concerned.

There are quite a few recipes that are INSANELY difficult to get, yet have no market value once learned. A good example is Formula: Enchant Shield – Lesser Block. The recipe is worth a fortune to completist collectors, but the actual enchant has almost zero demand.

Same here, I actually created a list just for this. My server’s economy is ridiculous though, and since it’s a medium population server, there weren’t any players in WoW Vanilla times. I can make up to 200-400g profit on these enchants, so it’s become part of my routine.

Herein lies the issue though: I’ve configured 2 KTQ macros to cover all the scrolls I wish to make, put in the spell ID using the ItemID addon and when I click on it, nothing happens. My tailoring list works perfect though.

In any case, I’m guessing it’s something to do with enchanting spell IDs, so I just wanted to know how else to go about getting these (without the addon), just so I can try and narrow down what seems to be going wrong, or get it right :-)

Thanx mate! your help is greatly appreciated.

I teach so this summer I decided I needed a project. I’ve set a goal of 75k before the end of August. Since I already had enchanting maxed out I figured I’d see how far it could take me. I also have JC on an alt, but I hate getting hammered on relisting fees so I’m reluctant to pursue it very heavily.

Using your advice I got LSW, Skillet, KTQ, and QA3 setup. Shuffling several thousand stacks of Saronite at a very reasonable price, I got enough mats to get myself started. In the last week, I’ve made just over 9k gold selling enchanting scrolls.

While that’s all well and good, I didn’t really think much about what I was doing until out of the blue, I got a tell from a Chinese farmer (or someone with a very limited understanding of the English language) telling me “every day i take up the price but u never show me any chance to sell them”.

    So in conclusion…Buy American?

  5. Dualas says:

That ktq macro doesn’t work for me, as you can’t actually queue a Scroll, you have to queue the enchant.

    • Tickles says:

I am having the same problems using the item number ie: ktq/ queue 2 38997 — will not work nor with any of the numbers if you somehow are using the scroll numbers I would love to know how

I am having problems with the ktq macro – I have been successfully using ktq for glyphs and gems for some time, and have been using simple ktq macros with skillet to produce them in the right amounts, so my addon setup works but I have not been able to use your macro. I copy/pasted it into my client but when I try to run it, ktq returns a lot of “Link is not item” error reports, and skips all the other items. Do I need to run a specific version of ktq or skillet? I have Little sparky’s clone r90, ktq, altoholic, all installed with the curse client and updated. What am I doing wrong?

Hey I really love your Blog.
This Guide helped my enchanter to earn about 13k gold and now I tried to use ktq to increase my profit.
    I type:
    /ktq queue 2
But nothing happened. I get only the message:
    Keyword:
    Stack Size: 2
    Total Added: 0
    Items Added: 0
    Items Skipped: 0

Any ideas to solve my problem?

PS: I’m sorry if there are any gramitically mistakes, but I’m from germany ;P

    • Kraklin says:

are you putting an item number after your /ktq queue 2 [item number here]

there is a KTQ tutorial on this site, just search for it at the top. Also a friend of mine runs a german gold site at http://goldgoblin.de/ so it might be easier to understand the tutorials there.

      • Shakreo says:

Yes, I’m putting an item numer in there. I don’t know why it is not visible in my first post Oo

I know the goldgoblin blog, but he doesn’t write about enchanting and I thought it was an specific problem with enchanting scrolls. Because i don’t have any Problems with my Jewelcrafter.

        • Kraklin says:

there actually is a specific problem with enchanting, make sure you are using the item number of the Scroll, not the spell… so enchant scroll crusher would be:
          /ktq queue 2 44458
          NOT
          /ktq queue 2 60668 < spell item number

          • Shakreo says:

Even with your macro, I’ve the same problem, but I don’t know why.
And I am using the Item number not the spell id.

          • Jake says:

            thx for that tip Kraklin!

gonna go redo my enchanting macros then.

          • Jake says:

Just did, still no go. Quite annoying; I know the set up works, enchanting, however, does not.

            Any ideas why?

I have tried with the spell id and scroll id, and none of them seem to work.

An even faster scroll creating tool is Scrollmaster

    http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/slippy.aspx

    1. It calculates the price of all raw materials and only produces scrolls that give profit
    2. Checks enchanting book for all creatable enchants
    3. Automates export to QA3 with fallback and threshold
    4. Crafting queue that selects the correct vellum without having to click on it

    Great tool, check it out.
