After taking my break in Cuba for the week I’ve returned to the Jewelcrafting market astonished at all the low priced raw epic gems currently available. My snatch list has been filling up with epic gems to buy.
We predicted this epic gem crash would happen because of the recent changes with the battleground changes and increased amount of honor gained. This caused a flood of people not only trying out the new random BG finder but also get more honor in the process.
Another factor for the price drop in epics has been the drop in players logging in, lower demand = lower price, but keep in mind that as the Icecrown raid buff keeps increasing that will allow those players who previously couldn’t progress past Putricide to start downing more and more bosses, more bosses downed = more gear = higher demand for gems.
Here’s a chart of how the prices have been affected on my server. I am fairly confident most players have experienced price drops in raw epic gems on their servers.
| Before | Now | Now | |||
| Gem name | Market | Market | Lowest Price | % Change Market | % Change Lowest |
| Scarlet Ruby | 44.7 | 34.17 | 39.5 | -23.56% | -11.63% |
| Autumn’s Glow | 15.76 | 12.24 | 9.53 | -22.34% | -39.53% |
| Sky Sapphire | 12.6 | 11.53 | 6.9 | -8.49% | -45.24% |
| Forest Emerald | 6.43 | 6.08 | 5 | -5.44% | -22.24% |
| Twilight Opal | 9.42 | 9.74 | 4.99 | +3.40% | -47.03% |
| Monarch Topaz | 6.43 | 6.37 | 5 | -0.93% | -22.24% |
| Avg | -9.56% | -31.32% | |||
| Majestic Zircon | 163 | 136 | 119 | -16.56% | -26.99% |
| Cardinal Ruby | 164 | 140 | 101 | -14.63% | -38.41% |
| Dreadstone | 140 | 121 | 100 | -13.57% | -28.57% |
| King’s Amber | 156 | 147 | 108 | -5.77% | -30.77% |
| Ametrine | 138 | 117 | 100 | -15.22% | -27.54% |
| Eye of Zul | 123 | 110 | 84 | -10.57% | -31.71% |
| Avg | -12.72% | -30.67% | |||
| Earthsiege Diamond | 39 | 64 | 61 | +64.10% | +56.41% |
| Skyflare Diamond | 36 | 39 | 47 | +8.33% | +30.56% |
So it looks like a 30% drop in prices across the board. Auctioneer market price takes a little bit of time to bring down the average since it’s saying only a 12% drop, but the change happened so fast that it’ll take a while to reflect in it’s market price calculations.
Keep in mind that this data was obtained at the start of peak time on Tuesday, prices are usually lowest on Sunday and Monday and rise again later Tuesday night, Wednesday and Thursday.
I am going to be changing the price at which I buy my raw gems at and lower my threshold I sell cut gems in my Quick Auctions config. None of my higher end gems have been selling because I’m still assuming my “cost” to make a Bold Cardinal Ruby is 164g but it has now dropped to 101g.
Pretty interesting to see though the price for Earthsiege diamonds has gone up almost double and Skyflare up 25%, shows the demand is high still for gems but it’s just not benefiting from the honor change since they can’t be sourced that way.
Is this pretty consistent with the epic gem price drop you’ve experienced on your servers?

hell yeah, prices have dropped like flies, ever market no matter which, I think until cataclysm we are doomed to a sorry ass market with marked-down prices
Hi ! I used to sell gems (green ones) but I sold epic gems to a Guild Master on my server. This one always buys all my epic gems. I sell them for about 1 gold less than at the AH. So even if the prices of epic gems went down, I’m sure that I’ll sell them
Ofc the prices went down, but I think this is not due to the drop of logging player but to the PvP system. We can easily make 2 gems in less than 2 hours. So PvE people do BG and farm their gems from their own.
Sorry for my bad english, I’m a french teenager ^^

When the prices first crashed on Oceanic/Caelestraz, it was in Cardinal Rubies and Majestic Zircons 90-100g – I bought as many as my cash supply allowed. These prices have recovered to about 120g, but with surprisingly few King’s amber, which is often going for 20-30g more than that.
Eye’s of Zul, Dreadstones and Ametrines are usually going for 80g (and still falling). I blindly snatched far too many Eye’s of Zul, and I expect that these will fall even further. My expectation is that this group is largely funded by Random Heroic badges (only cost 10 each).
The cut sell price for both primary and secondary colour gems is also falling.
My snatch price for diamonds is currently 25g/35g respectively (dont remember which is cheap/expensive). The nicest thing about diamonds is that the cut sell price still gives a nice yeild. I make more profit per cut meta gem (than epic’s), with steady sales.
The prices on my realm are pretty similar to your’s. Rares and Epic’s becoming cheaper and cheaper which the prices of meta’s have also risen. I am still havnt changed my threashold to sell or to buy gems at.
Even tho loads of cuts are now under my threashold, i am simply only making one of these, but the ones which are higher are still selling for even more profit now.
I wonder if they will go back up in price enough to stockpile in the ruby sanctum.

My server is much like Foo’s. There has been a drop in gems, mainly amertrines and eye of zuls and dreadstones, but uncut majestics, cardinals and king’s amber’s are still very much around the 130-150g price set. The oddest thing about this is ( and a huge frustration of mine ) that cut examples red/blue/yellow’s are acutally LOWER on the AH than the raw gems. Sometimes nearly 30-40g less than the raws. My theory on this is people BG, buy a gem, then spam trade looking for someone to cut it into something they think will yield more money than the uncut. Looking like a lot of people also had this same idea. Hopefully people give their head a shake and the market will straighten itself out.
I tried to do some profit with JC and at the moment. I am not sure what i should do. I read your post about the bouncing effect of epic gems an start to buy some Cardinal Ruby. Now i have round about 50 gems in my bag but the price of Runed Cardinal Ruby goes down from 239g to 165g. I bought them for 150g each. What do you think? Shoud i wait for an possible bouncing effect?

I noticed the trend a few days ago and to my shock, after buying a stack of King’s Amber for about 120g each (about 30g each lower then normal) the price was lower then that the NEXT day. I did my best to cut and post quickly to maximize profits before my comp could buy lower raw and post lower at the same margin. It is soo bad on my server that I can’t post more then 2 of each epic cut a day when buying the uncut gems. A busy BG day and the price tanks.
Just a thing to remember is that because people are playing more BG’s and thus are more active at PvP, more PvP gems will sell because of players wanting to gem pvp gear. At least I have been selling more pvp gems lately. Anyone else noticing that?
I bought some new pvp-gem recipes because i have notice that these gems are better to sell.
I seem to be making more money because of these changes. I am getting raw gems lower than ever, and still making same profits even though the prices have dropped. I am able to have a higher mark-up per item without a slow down in how fast they sell.
On my server it’s nearly the same … bit worse. I was surprised that the effect from the bg changes took that long to take affect. But awaiting this price drop prevent me from buying alot of gems. Now the prices seems to touch the ground. Maybe they’ll increase, maybe not. Weired issue: cut gems are often cheaper than raw ones at my server!
The bad thing: titanium ore stayed at it’s price .. no longer worth buying. Very rarely there are some ores for 10g each. Similar to saronite.
Additional: prices for the green gems (necklaces to vendor) are raised round about 50%
At the moment I’m observing some slightly rare items. Especially AH-twinks-items.
The good thing they aren’t that rare that you won’t find any, but rare enough to push the market price easely if you got some.
That’s not a big income but it’s fun meanwhile … waiting the gem market firms up (stabilize).
The reason for the drop in price is due to the higher proc-rate for transmute specialist.
I recieved multiple procs last weeks.
