Analysis and Discussion of Making Gold in World of Warcraft

DK update

Since I posted an update on my progress to hit the gold cap yesterday I felt it was fitting to also do a quick update on the DK 10K project. In which I started a DK on a completely new server without any help to hit 10K gold as fast as possible from scratch.

A lot of things have changed, Phase 1 was leveling from 55 – 65 while slowly buying up Jewelcrafting materials (using snatch, to get items at <80% value) to prepare for the powerlevel. Once I hit level 65 I leveled up Jewelcrafting to 450 skill and I must say it was a pretty tight squeeze, down to my last gold to finish it off. Total time to accomplish all this was 40 hours played.

Now in Phase 2 I have to actually start making gold with jewelcrafting to hit 10k. The original plan was to level up enchanting as well but I think that’d be a waste of time in the short run (although I’d do it if this was fastest way to 20k or more).

Total Gold Worth Currently

The DK has 90 hours played, however my previous update explains why I had an extra 9 hours of time from other activities not related to the project, plus I left the DK logged in while doing some research on jewelcrafting so the total is around 75 hours played.

In that time I’ve leveled the DK from 55 – 66 (averages 2.3 hours per level because most was rested) = 26 hours leveling, another 7 hours mining to get gold to invest into jewelcrafting items, then 6 hours to level jewelcrafting from 1-450.

So in the additional 35 hours, the time after I hit 450 JC, I made 4,231g and learned 5 jewelcrafting recipes bought with 14 Dalaran JC tokens.

Since hitting level 66 and getting JC to 450 I have been busy getting on with my gold making strategy in what I think will be the fastest way to 10k. I kept mining as my secondary profession in case I needed to get some more capital and I’m very glad I did, it was the main way I made gold to pick up my first couple JC recipes.

What Recipes I Picked

I outlined in a previous post my method for picking the best jewelcrafting recipes for the highest profit. I basically based it on the gems that had the highest profit margin (on average and current AH prices) but also compared it to the wowpopular list and gave it a popularity rank. I didn’t want to invest into gems that were extremely popular right away as I knew these would have a lot of competition.

Gem Recipe Choice #1 – Rigid Autumn’s Glow = 3x Dalaran tokens

Gem Recipe Choice #2 – Bold Scarlet Ruby = 3x Dalaran tokens

Gem Recipe Choice #3 – Delicate Cardinal Ruby = 4x Dalaran tokens

Gem Recipe Choice #4 – Solid Majestic Zircon = 4x Dalaran tokens

Gem Recipe Choice #5 – Relentless Earthsiege Diamond = 5x Dalaran Tokens

I hit 450 JC on March 8th, but wasn’t able to do the JC daily until March 10th (when I realized that I could do the JC Daily at level 66 without having to waste time lvling to 70). I was dumb and forgot to do the JC daily for 2 days, so I ended up with 14 JC tokens to date.

Since I’m not level 77 I can’t buy the Damaged Necklaces to turn in which would be much cheaper, they go for 250g on my server, so I’ve had to resort to buying up titanium powders for 35g each which = 350g per Dalaran Token. Given that I have invested 19 tokens in recipes minus 5 gained from the daily = 14 tokens bought with powders at 350g each = 4,900g invested in tokens.

This may seem strange, since this whole project is based on hitting 10k as fast as possible and so far I’ve invested 4,900g into tokens and I am holding 4,300g worth of inventory. Well I couldn’t have made that gold without hitting 450 JC in the first place as my main income sources has definitely been Prospecting and a little gem selling

How I’m Making Gold with Jewelcrafting

Having only 4 recipes is a little tough to make profits on since the majority of gems are only selling at a 10g profit (when you include AH cut), some of the gems you learn at 450 JC from the trainer are actually selling pretty decently though.

My main gold has come from doing a “Prospecting” search with auctioneer and posting the materials on the auction house. My main gold maker has been buying up adamantite ores and relisting the gems from it, usually the value of the adamantite powder that I sell for 14g each covers the cost and the rest of the gems are all profit.

Selling JC items to vendors gave me a 500g boost the other day when I found tons of bloodstone at under 1g and eternal earths at 4g each.

Strategy Moving Forward

Since this is a short project to hit 10k I am going to stop investing into more recipe cuts now as it seems whenever I get to 2k gold I just dump it all into titanium powders so I will make gold with the cuts I have which I am confident will earn a good amount, especially the Relentless Earthsiege Diamond cut as I haven’t seen any posted on the AH for a few days but I know it’s popular.

I will continue utilizing prospecting which to be honest I think is going to be the main factor in hitting 10k, I always see a huge list of profitable ores to flip for 2x prospecting profit but I’m reluctant to invest all gold due to wanting to get more recipe cuts. I will move forward with the prospecting, crafting the cuts I now have and doing the JC items to vendor shuffle if cheap eternal earths and green gems are available on the AH.

I am eager to hit 10k so that I can wrap up the project then dump 5k into the DK and Powerlevel enchanting right away and pick up another 10 cuts to really start setting up a full fledged Jewelcrafting business.

Main lesson I’ve probably learned from this whole project so far, fastest way to 10k would of been making the DK, getting to level 58, picking up Mining/Herbalism and just gathering mining/herbalism up to hellfire penninsula (fel iron ores actually sell for 40g/stack on my server) That would of taken me 4 hours to get to lvl 58 + 5 hours leveling mining/herb (and getting 1,750g in the process) then another 16 hours gathering up to hellfire penninsula at 500g/hour. Total 25 hours to 10k… but getting there with just gathering would of been.. well.. just boring :) Maybe deserves a side experiment in the future to see if it would actually be that fast.

Interesting choices for your designs. I’ve just been purchasing epic designs and haven’t given much thought about rare / meta cuts.

I don’t think it’s worth a side project to level mining and mine for 25 hours… sounds really boring and a waste of time, unless you like doing that, it is your $15 after all, not mine :)

boring indeed.. but someones gotta do the dirty work I guess. When people ask “how can I get 5K as fast as possible?!” I want to have an article to point them to.. would be much simpler too to gain 5k by mining/herbing than setting up a whole JC business.

Very nice! I’ve been trying to do that “vendor with accessories,” and you’re right. It is quite a good, and easy way to get money. Thanks for the tips!

Also, this question is a bit off-topic, and you might not be experienced with it…But, I have about 1000g in Flasks, and I’m quite unsure about the Frost Lotus prices. What should I do with them? I try to sell them at raid times, and they are doing well. But I need to sell them pretty soon. 3.3.3 is hitting pretty soon, I believe. Any suggestions?

Sorry I am not that knowledgable in the alchemy market yet.. I’ll ask some of my WoW millionaire friends and report back to you. I really need to get a forum going on in the site.
