After hitting the gold cap I have now started recording my weekly income reports in a new way.
I have begun recording all the time I spent on each profession, including crafting, posting, buying mats or anything related to that profession. I have also separated how much profit each profession earns independently so we can compare how much profit was made given how much effort it took to see which profession is the easiest to make gold with. I’ve learned to maximize my gold earnings by applying the lessons in WoW Schools guide.
Also included in my reports now will be a breakdown of what I sold and my best selling items in each category.
This report is between the dates of June 2nd to June 13 with the following professions:
- Inscription
- Enchanting
- Jewelcrafting
- Engineering (only selling BoE pets)
Profession Income Report
From June 2nd to June 13 I made 11,783g profit, I was not playing for some days.
I spent in total 9 hours and 38 minutes to make that profit = 1,223g profit/hour.
Inscription Gold Per Hour
While Inscription takes the most time out of any profession, the crafting time only takes half of your attention (just mashing the craft button every few seconds) and the cancel/repost time is pretty much completely afk time. However even though it requires very little effort it does prevent you from doing anything else in game.
| Time | Crafting | Cancel/Post | Other | Total |
| 2:36 | 2:38 | 0:24 | 5:38 | |
| Avg Per Glyph | Total Profit | |||
| Gold | 12g 7s | 4409g 52s | ||
| Gold/Hour | 782g 75s |
So inscription makes 782g an hour and my average is 1,223g/hr, this is obviously a pretty weak profession but given that most of the time is afk it is better than going out and farming or doing dailies.
Jewelcrafting Gold Per Hour
Jewelcrafting is very straight forward. Once you have a good amount of popular cuts to sell you just need to log on, click your KTQ macro to queue up whatever you’re low on inventory, press your Quick Auctions post button and you’re done. Throw in one or two cancel/repost cycles that take about 2 minutes each and you’re making more sales.
| Time | Profit Earned | Gold/Hour |
| 1:23 | 3,122g | 2257g |
This is why I love Jewelcrafting so much, the time investment is so small and the return is very nice.
Enchanting Gold Per Hour
Enchanting is also a very quick profession to do. Although not as fast as JCing because you need to hunt for specific mats depending on the scrolls you are making but once you have the scrolls that you consistently sell in a KTQ macro you just need to keep your inventory stocked and Quick Auctions will do the rest.
| Time | Profit Earned | Gold/Hour |
| 2:00 | 2893 | 1446g |
So not as high as jewelcrafting, crafting does take some more effort to hunt for materials and logging on my alt to make vellums takes some time too.
Engineering Gold Per Hour
Keep in mind with these figures that although this is a very fast profession to do and requires very little effort, this is pretty much the max profit I can make since I’m covering the market and pretty much all sales that I can. This may change once I start selling ammo but the profit per stack of bullets sold is pretty low.
| Time | Profit Earned | Gold/Hour |
| 0:37 | 1359 | 2203g |
I only spend about 8-10 minutes a day on Engineering, and that is with collecting mail and reposting any BoE pets that are out of stock. However I couldn’t make any more gold than this even if I spent more time since I have made all the sales I can and don’t have ammo recipes yet.
The Highest Gold Per Effort Profession?
Jewelcrafting wins here with 2,257g profit per hour played.
Best Selling Items
I also recorded what recipes made me the most sales this week, I didn’t include glyphs because frankly you should be making all glyphs to a stack of 5 and then just crafting whatever you run out of stock on.

and now it’s time for some fancy charts!

I’ll be picking up some more jewelcrafting cuts and getting the harder to find enchanting recipes to see if I can up the profit earned from those professions.
Stay tuned for next weeks report!

A gem cut that i make constant profit on is the Fractured Cardinal, try to track some prices, but i know Fury warriors, hunters, rogues, druids and dks all like these gems a lot, so often i find the AH void of them or priced really high, perfect to undercut and make decent profit (upto 50g per)
This is a fantastic article, invaluable – must have taken a while. Thanks!
Wow, amazing post this is great. Makes me wonder how much my time is actually worth while crafting ect.
This post is all kinds of genius. Thanks for taking the time to log this and share it.
I don’t have a lot of time to devote to gold making, so I need to maximize my GPH when I focus on it.
Great post, very useful info. How do you go about getting your materials? Do you buy greens and d/e or do you just buy stacks of cheap enchanting mats. Likewise, do you buy raw gems or do you prospect? If so, how much do you pay per stack of ore?
Nice post, and confirms my idea that JC rocks
One little question tho, you mention using a KTQ macro for enchanting.
Now, i myself use it for both JC and inscription, but i can’t get it to work with enchanting, especially not with twink enchants.
lvl 80 enchants like Titanweave works great, as there are no other recipes with that name, but for example Agility on weapon and Stats on chest doesn’t work. If i type the full name, the macro doesn’t work, but if i only write Agility or Stats, suffice to say, every recipe containing those words get queued.
So, theres my problem, and i hope you can help me fix it.
Jondare
Use item name instead
/ktq queue 2 38999
^^ that is for Enchant Chest – Greater Defense. You can find it names in the URL on wowhead when you search for items. “item=38999″
Ah, thanks a lot
Using ktq queue for enchants i need to disable threshold to get it to work, therefore my method of creating enchants that are only profitable at the time do not work.
Hey, to inprove some gold for inscription, I found out about Rituals of the New Moon. It is basically an offhand that turns you into different colored giant wolves. I craft these for about 40g each and sellm them for about 350-400g. And they sell like hotcakes, too!
Hey, just a little way of greatly improving your enchanting gold per hour is to get some of the twink/heirloom enchants. Here is a list of the ones I know sell very well.
Crusader weapon
Lifestealing weapon
Unholy weapon
Fiery weapon
15 agility to 1H weap
25 agility to 2H weap
15 strengh to 1H weap
30 sppower to 1H weap
29 sppower to 1H weap
22 intellect to 1H weap
15 agility to gloves
9 stamina to bracers
9 strengh to bracers
100 health to chest
150 health to chest
4 stats to chest
7 stamina to boots
7 strengh to bracer
7 agility to boots
7 agility to gloves
10 haste to gloves
minor speed increase to boots
65 mana to chest
100 mana to chest
9+ damage to 2H weapon
15 spell power to bracer
20 spirit to weapon
Those are all the enchants that people use for their heirlooms and twinks. Some of them are harder to come by, but some like de agi to weap only need honored with Timbdermaw and you get both 15agi and 25agi with just that rep. Just my two copper
